Dr. Karen Schaeffer is the State Cadre 3 Technical Assistance Specialist with the Midwest and Plains Equity Assistance Center. Her role includes equity-focused professional development and consultation with state and local departments of education in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Dr. Schaeffer is co-founder and co-director of Empowering Education, LLC and Empowering Connections, Inc. She serves as coordinator for The Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Coalition and is pastorfor Bethel AME Church both of which are located in Lebanon, Ohio. Dr. Schaeffer’s experiences include family advocacy across multiple community agencies and she has served with state committees to plan and implement effective academic and behavior prevention and intervention systems. She has helped support urban, rural and suburban schools in district-wide efforts toward evidence-based practices for school improvement and has consulted with representative leadership teams to support implementation of culturally responsive and sustaining tiered-systems of academic and behavior supports. She is skilled in planning, providing and evaluating high quality professional development and educational programs. She routinely contributes to and participates in numerous regional, state and national conferences and has authored and contributed to publications related to equity and justice.
