Institute Overview
 

The fall institute is a dynamic two-day intensive learning experience designed to support practitioners in expanding their ability to effectively lead equity-focused education improvement initiatives. The 2017 Equity Leaders Institute will focus on (1) critiquing traditional district improvement discourse that focuses on “closing the achievement gap” and reframing the discourse to focus efforts on addressing systemic inequities that are barriers to student learning, (2) examining the stages people and systems go through when engaging in transformative change in order to anticipate the needs of staff members and stakeholders, (3) exploring equity-oriented leadership practices, and (4) planning for initiating actions to increase their systems’ capacities to cultivate equity-oriented leaders.
 
INSTITUTE OBJECTIVES 
 
  • Expand and apply their understanding of the leadership considerations and approaches for effectively leading equity-focused education improvement initiatives.  
  • Explore how leadership practices can promote or constrain educators’ and education stakeholders’ efforts to mobilize and redress systemic inequities and improve outcomes for historically marginalized students. 
  • Identify needs and resources for advancing their organization’s capacity to effectively lead equity-focused education improvement initiatives.
